SIDDI COMMUNITY CENTRE
Dear Friends,

The Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, African Indian Alliance, Wellesley College, and the Rotary Club of Wellesley have been supporting the Siddi Community in Karnataka, India.

The origin of the Siddi (Africans in India) goes back over 800 years ago. The Siddi presence in India can be traced to times when African navigators navigated merchants and militia entering India. However, the majority of Africans arrived in India as enslaved peoples. The Omani Arabs, the Portuguese the French, and the British were responsible for taking Africans to India. Today there are about 30,000 Siddi in Karnataka They have limited access to basic needs such as healthcare, employment and education.

We had never met a Siddi or heard of them before, I was introduced to Ramanth, a social worker, at an event organized by World Of Wellesley. Ramnath is working to build a community centre in his hometown.

Please help us reach our goal, and feel free to contact me with any questions,

Sincerely,
 Effa Fouda & Marguerite Chatelier

Cloud Nine:
This is an abstract oil painting. This is a painting that portrays nature itself. I personally feel peaceful near a beach or waterfall. It makes me happy and relaxed. I named this painting Cloud nine because somewhere in my mind I feel when you are in  cloud nine and near a waterfall you kind of have the same feelings and emotions. I wanted this painting to be little magical and beautiful and that was the idea before bringing it to life.

Gorgeous the way I am:
This painting is a portrait painting, a mixture of oil and Tempera. Since this was for the Siddi Community I thought it would be nice if I paint something that represents their community. An African  woman who is gorgeous the way she is, in her culture, in her identity and the place she represents. And they say "Beauty is in the heart of beholder". I Hope that these paintings will help you see beyond what I see.

Miss Blue:
This is an abstract oil painting.
The wings represent that we all have wings that carry us higher and higher as we get older. It  represents the lessons we learn and experiences we go through in life, which makes our wings stronger day by day.
I have chosen a blue background to it as blue represents peace.
I hope this painting will help you see beyond what I see.

Desi Indian:
This is a Portrait painting. Its a mixture of Tempera and oil paints. In India our events and festivals are so colourful. This painting respents two events in India. It can either respent a wedding or the Holi festival in India (which is the festival of colours). The Holi festival is on 9th of March. This painting gives a happy vibe which we don't want to get over with. I hope this painting makes your life really colourful and always give you happy vibes.
